The first level of the Infarian capital was in utter ruin. Fierce flames ravaged every one of Flamora's streets, savagely devouring the masonry of the houses and shops that lined them like they were doused with a coat of paraffin, robbing them of their bright colouration and leaving them a grotesque shade of charcoal. Even from where the flames had already passed, thick clouds of black smoke still continued to rise into the dark sky from the charred remains of the once fine structures. Little remained of the various foliage that had once stood along every stone walkway, leaving only the thin skeletons of a handful of trees that would forever be without their greenery. Vaan stood atop the highest section of the palace wall. The panoramic view of his Father's city was gruesome.

What he had seen while he had been hanging from the wall had only been the beginning. Ill-fated civilians appeared to have been hung up for display, lifeless corpses impaled upon large spears, the jagged blades plunged deep into the burning flesh of their bodies.

Have the Gods no mercy?

His eyes fell on the mutilated form of a young boy fully impaled on an enemy spear. “What offence could we have given, Uthur,” he questioned, turning to the sword master who was standing beside him, “that would warrant such carnage as this?”

“It was no offence of ours, lad,” Uthur answered grimly, his bearded face still turned towards the burning slaughter ground. “Whatever reasons they had for this atrocity, it was of their own making and history shall rightly show that we played no part in helping them come to it.” It was a lie of course and Vaan was sure that both he and the general knew it. Nothing on the scale of what they were seeing could be done without some prior motivation. Even if they were truly innocent, the blame for the horrific amount of innocent blood that had been spilt would still come to rest on their shoulders.

Although the city's large exterior walls were a fortress, if a hostile force managed to make it behind the walls, the fate of the battle and the lives of the people would rely solely on the might of their soldiers. But there had been no battle to begin and instead the citizens and soldiers alike had been sleeping peacefully in their beds when these beasts attacked, leaving only a handful of inexperienced city guards to try and hold off death. Only now, when he was able to see past the thick smog of ash and smoke did he truly see the army they were up against.

Thousands of a foreign race filled the tightly packed city streets. Brutish monstrosities like the one he had slain back up in the palace, and herds of a much smaller breed that were dressed in a strange leather battle dress and walked with hunchbacks. Their black-skinned spindly arms almost dragged across the ground, heavy armaments clasped between their clawed fingers. Titanic behemoths that
